Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson are going to have to make some room at their table!
With ratings down during season seven and Nigel Lythgoe out as executive producer, the folks at American Idol are shaking things up this season starting by adding a permanent fourth judge. Singer/songwriter Kara DioGuardi, who has worked with Christina Aguilera, new mom Gwe Stefani and Justin Timberlake, is the new hire.
"We are turning the heat up on Idol this year and are thrilled to welcome Kara to the judges' table," creator/executive producer Simon Fuller said in a press release. "She is a smart, sassy lady, and one of America's most successful songwriters. We know she will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the show."
Added executive producer Cécile Frot-Coutaz, "We had originally intended for American Idol to have four judges. We've seen from our international series that having a fourth judge creates a dynamic that benefits both the contestants and the viewers."
As for Kara, she's pretty thrilled to be joining the hit series. "When they told me I was [hired] I just didn't believe it," she said earlier today. "I still don't believe it. I don't even know what I'm doing here right now. I'm just trying to enjoy it and trying to take it one day as it comes."
The eighth season of Idol returns to the air in January on Fox.
